Carrie Pendergrass

Artist Statement: As a painter-turned-printmaker, I have been focusing on creating my own methods of creating monotypes (single-edition, one-of-a-kind prints) for the last 5+ years. I use acrylic paints or inks on re-usable Gel printing plates, and print everything by hand, sometimes introducing hand painting directly into the prints, as well. Each shape/line/element is printed individually or in sections, with an individual piece being printed on anywhere from 5 to 50 times! Most of my work is an exploration of unique color and shape relationships, often inspired by natural and manmade forms that I see in everyday life. I gather much of my visual inspiration through photographs from daily walks, which can be anything from cracks and water stains on pavement to the color play of a flowering tree against a building façade. Each work is like a puzzle that I build by creating each piece as I go along. Sometimes I have a very ordered plan, and other times, I let the materials express themselves in a more free-form way. It is about visual problem-solving for me. I’m always thinking about new ways that I can make my ideas work by experimenting with different approaches to a very open-ended platform that has little to no “rules” or history, and I’m excited by the possibilities.
